Vitamin B9 (Folic Acid) Oral Supplements

What is this medication?

VITAMIN B9 (VAHY tuh min B9), or FOLIC ACID (FOE lik AS id), prevents and treats low levels of folate (vitamin B9) in your body. Folate plays an important role in forming red blood cells and maintaining brain health. Folate also supports a healthy pregnancy and lowers the risk of birth defects of the brain and spine.

What should I tell my care team before I take this medication?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • Health issues you have now or have had in the past
  • An unusual or allergic reaction to any medication, supplement, food, dye, or preservative
  • Pregnant or trying to get pregnant
  • Breastfeeding

How should I use this medication?

Take this supplement as directed on the label. Do not take it more often than recommended. Talk to your care team if you take other medications or supplements.

Talk to your care team before giving supplements to a child. Special care may be needed.

Overdosage: If you think you have taken too much of this medicine contact a poison control center or emergency room at once.

NOTE: This medicine is only for you. Do not share this medicine with others.

What if I miss a dose?

Do not use this supplement more often than directed.

What side effects may I notice from receiving this medication?

Side effects that you should report to your care team as soon as possible:

  • Allergic reactions—skin rash, itching, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
  • Pain, tingling, or numbness in the hands or feet
  • Shortness of breath or trouble breathing

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report these to your care team if they continue or are bothersome):

  • Change in taste
  • Gas
  • General discomfort and fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea

Where should I keep my medication?

Keep out of the reach of children and pets.
